KoCVAM’s Purpose and Mission

  • In accordance with the Article 5 of the Laboratory Animal Act and Article 2 of the enforcement rule of the Act, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation(MFDS) founded the Korean Center for the Validation of Alternative Methods (KoCVAM) under the Toxicological Evaluation and Research Department at the National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation in 2009 with the aim of boosting development and adoption of alternative test methods.
  • KoCVAM’s missions are ⅰ) to promote development of alternative test methods according to the 3R principles, ⅱ) to carry out validation and peer review of domestically developed alternative methods and proposal of test guidelines, ⅲ) to pursue international harmonization of domestically developed alternative test methods through active cooperation and communication with global organizations and ⅳ) to promote adoption, dissemination and utilization of alternative methods through education and providing information on alternative methods.
Animal Welfare
  • Policy support

    Formulate and promote policies concerning the development and approval of alternatives to animal testing

  • Validation

    Coordinate the process of validating and peer reviewing alternative test methods and proposing validated test methods to the OECD for guidelines

  • Collaboration

    Conduct research in collaboration with domestic and overseas institutions

  • Dissemination

    Provide information regarding alternative test methods and educational programs for industry, academia and research institutions
